Lowell Stephens is a painter and multidisciplinary artist from Queens, New York. His practice is process-based and grounded in a daily discipline of drawing.
Trained in architectural technology, Stephens brings a structural sensibility to intuitive ways of working: paintings built drawing-first, figures and places that emerge from layers of color and gesture.
Stephens draws on a growing trove of personal references. Gathered from life, history, and his own past work, each finished piece opens the next investigation. Taken together, the work is an attempt to leave a personal history through works of art.
